Bula Bula
We've just returned to Musket Cove, having had a tremendous week in the Yasawas with Pete and Kate. We were running out of provisions, and running out of Kava for the sevu-sevus [the kava ceremonies at the villages]. There's no question of buying supplies, as the islanders have very little apart from what they catch and grow. We did in fact buy a large fish and some lobsters yesterday, and Jofric made some sashimi as well as some wonderful steaks.
The reefs and their fish are just unbelievable, and the snorkelling fantastic, as you know. There are so many different corals and a profusion of fish of all sorts. Unlike the Caribbean the corals are all alive and well and apparently thriving. It's the tiny reef fish with their vivid, almost luminous colours, that are so striking, and we also saw a lot of larger fish like groupers and trevally. In Vadra bay 3 days ago, Pete and I were snorkelling on a reef when Mie noticed both of us heading for the boat with an enormous bow-wave - we had been inspected closely by a shark which my bowels told me was 30 feet long, but which was probably only 5 feet. Neither of us liked to let on to the other that he was scared, but we both moved pretty sharpish!
Apart from the amazing nature, we will also remember the wonderful people in the Islands: they seemed genuinely pleased to see us, and welcome us to their villages. Anyway, we are now back to relative civilisation, and Pete and Kate return home in a couple of days.
