Palma, Majorca. We left Mahon on 29.04.04 with a favourable forecast, but in the event had a miserable force 6 from the WSW, ie on the nose, so we decided to grit our teeth and bash into it under power. So we had a wet and cold trip to Porto Colom, on the East coast of Majorca. It's said to be the best protected harbour in the Balearics, and it was very sheltered, but unfortunately very shallow, and we couldn't get on to the quay. Nevertheless, we had a pleasant night at anchor for a change. The following day was hot and sunny with a nice wind from the SW, and once we went round Capo Salinas, the SE point of Majorca, we had a glorious sail up into Puerto di Palma. We sometimes imagine that we have large marinas on the south coast, but we are not in the same league as the marinas here. We are in Real Club Nautico di Palma, which must have more yachts in it than the whole of the Hamble, and it is only one of three or four marinas. What's more, it was officially full, as were all the other marinas, and we were very lucky that the charming lady in the marina office knew a friend who is away for a few days, so we eventually tied up for a few days. The facilities are very good - almost the equal of Port Gocek, which is saying something. Palma is a fantastic city, and the cathedral in particular stunning. Yesterday we hired a car, and drove round most of the island. Current plans are to leave tomorrow for Ibiza, and reach Altea on the Spanish mainland a couple of days later.
